Olympic champions surprised again

The Olympic champions suprised Argentina by defeating them 2-0 before a big local attendance, in the closing of the second day of the 12th women's Champions Trophy at the Jockey Club yesterday.

Kerstin Hoyer, in the 40th minute, and Marion Rodewald, in the 57th, netted for the Germans.

After yesterday's results, Holland and Germany lead the standings with full points after two matches, followed by Argentina with three, China and New Zealand with one and Australia without points.

Argentina attacked from the very start, dominating throughout the field, but they produced few dangerous advances, except in the first 15 minutes.

In the sixth minute, Soledad García missed a golden chance when she was left alone in front of goal after a wonderful solo play by Luciana Aymar, who gave the Córdoba player an accurate cross.

Ten minutes later, Cecilia Rognoni entered the pitch and Argentina defended with only three players.

The national side continued their dominance, but their advances died in the edge of the circle or were well saved by German keeper Yvonne Frank.

Germany improved after half-time, moving up from defence and specially their forward Hoyer, who rushed through the right wing with constant dangerous. Then, four minutes after the break, Hoyer herself opened the score thanks to a rebound from Argentine keeper Mariela Antoniska after a shot by Nadine Ernsting-Krienke.

From then on, Argentina attacked more and more looking for the deserved equalizer but crashed against a solid German defence.

In another lethal counter-attack, Germany got a penalty corner that Natascha Keller shot powerfully and Antoniska saved brilliantly, but she could not prevent Rodewald's shot, who capitalized on the rebound to seal the 2-0 victory.
