Bronze for Argentina

The women's national team defeated Australia 3-2 to take the bronze in the 12th BDO Champions Trophy yesterday at the Jockey Club.

With goals by Cecilia Rognoni, in the 19th and 48th minutes, and Luciana Aymar - in the 54th - Argentina defeated the Aussies, which goals netted by Karen Smith and Suzie Faulkner, in the eighth and 34th minutes.

This match marked the retiring of national coach Sergio Vigil and forward Vanina Oneto.

Argentina kept the pace from the start, but a fast counter-attack by outstanding Suzie Faulkner - in the seventh minute - finished in a cross that Karen Smith capitalized on for the 1-0 lead.

From then on, Argentina increased the pressure specially with the entrance of Oneto who added power to the front line, producing several penalty corners. In one of them, in the 18th minute, Argentina equalized through Cecilia Rognoni from a corner pass.

Previously, Magdalena Aicega had scored from a short corner, but the umpire annulled it, an apparent legal shot.

After the equalizer, Argentina created more dangerous attacks but it was Australia, who scored again - a minute before half-time, through Faulkner from a corner deflection after a shot by Emily Halliday.

After half-time, national coach placed María de la Paz Hernández in midfield, while Aymar joined the front line becoming a nightmare for the Aussies back row. Then, the national side equalized again by Rognoni from a corner shot, in the 48th minute.

Meanwhile, Oneto continued getting penalty corners, probably the 50 percent of the corners were got by her. Thus, Aymar put Argentina 3-2 ahead, also from a corner, in the 53rd minute.

The Australian team protested the Argentine goal as it was Aymar's first shot at goal and the ball did not hit the board. Previously Aymar made a false attempt and the English umpired considered it as the first shot at goal.
